Dear Editor:
Caltrans must do their part in assisting the citizens of San Mateo County to make an informed decision regarding Devil's Slide in November. The voters need an accurate and up to date estimate of the cost of the bypass.
Available cost estimates for the bypass do not reflect new environmental mitigation, necessary new bridge structures, current seismic engineering standards, or hydraulic capacity standards. In contrast, cost estimates for the tunnel derived from the federally mandated tunnel study will be accurate and will reflect state-of-the-art engineering practices.
Without an updated and independently verified cost for the bypass, voters will be forced to compare "apples and oranges" when they make their decisions about Measure T in November.
